The prime advantage of the APU design is that the distance between the CPU and the GPU is reduced by a huge extent, as both processors are present on the same unit. Such a model leveraged by HSA allows CPU-GPU or intra-APU communication at a much faster rate than the conventional method: CPUs and GPUs being separately assembled on a motherboard. So, APU motherboards are specifically designed for this purpose.
Though APUs are marketed as an AMD product, Intel also manufactures such units according to the same standards.
