Contrary to NVIDIA's proprietary CUDA, ROCm is an open source platform that was released by AMD for open GPU computing in 2016. Since ROCm is open source, cross-platform programmability is very convenient through HIP, HC, and OpenCL. To be able to use ROCm, owning an AMD GPU is not a mandatory requirement, and GPGPU programming can be achieved through HIP on NVIDIA GPUs. AMD GPU owners can directly use HC for the same purpose.
