Among the most tweaked Ceph settings are those that limit the behavior of backfill and recovery. We explored these in Chapter 6, Operations and Maintenance. In summary: one trades off the speed of healing against disruption to ongoing client operations. Through the Hammer LTS release, the defaults were too aggressive for many deployments, especially those running on relatively slow LFF HDDs with colocated journals. The Jewel release brought significantly more conservative defaults; if you're running Jewel or later, you may do well without tweaks. If you're on an earlier release, revisit Chapter 6, Operations and Maintenance, and consider throttling these down.
