This may seem trivial, but naming conventions for servers can be surprisingly controversial. Many Ceph deployments will use names like ceph-osd-01 and ceph-mon-03. Others have organizational conventions of naming systems after their serial numbers or by location, encoding a datacenter room, row, rack, and RU into a name like dh3a1r3ru42.example.com. While location-based hostnames may seem awkward, their appeal grows after repeated painful mistakes resulting from role-based hostnames:
