Networking options
Improved networking is perhaps the single most effective use of money within your Ceph cluster, and at times the most easily overlooked. This is the worst part of your architecture for penny-pinching, and the most difficult to fix later. Don't do it. Just don't.
Most Ceph clusters are deployed with Ethernet networking, though Infiniband and other technologies are not unknown. As Ceph uses TCP/IP, it can use most types of network infrastructure. Lab, Proof of Concept (PoC), and very small clusters may get by with 1Gb/s links, but most sizeable production clusters demand at least 10 Gb/s. Larger and SSD-based installations are increasingly utilizing emerging 25 Gb/s, 40 Gb/s, and 100 Gb/s networks.
