Check the port configurations

You might have several options for connecting. For instance, your Mac recognizes that you have a modem port (whether you use it or not), and it might find a wireless card and an Ethernet port. Every possibility it finds is listed in the “Port Configurations.” To see the possibilities, choose “Network Port Configurations” from the Show menu, as shown below.

Your Mac goes down this list in order and chooses the first interface that works. It's a good idea to make sure your preferred connection is at the top of the list—just drag it to the top and drop it. If there is a connection listed that you don't want it to even try, like a dial-up internal modem, uncheck it.
