When shooting sports in low light, here are the steps I take to get a proper exposure. These steps work best when the light is even, but you can adjust the advice for shooting in a venue that includes bright and dark areas.
1. Look around the venue and pick a spot where the light is the lowest.
2. Set the ISO to 1600.
3. Set the camera to manual mode.
4. Set a minimal shutter speed to freeze the action.
5. Set the aperture to the widest possible setting.
6. Take a photo.
7. Check the display on the back of the camera to see if the photo is too light or too dark.
8. If the image is too light, you need to increase the ISO to 3200.
9. If the image is too dark, increase the shutter speed by a stop.
