The shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter is open, allowing light to reach the sensor. The longer the shutter is open, the more light is allowed in. The shutter speed also controls how motion is shown in images. In sports photography, most of the time the subject is in motion. You might take a photo of a helmet on a bench or a team in a huddle, but you’re usually capturing the action. What that means is the subject is in motion when the shutter opens and stays in motion until the shutter closes. Therefore, to freeze the action, the amount of time the shutter is open needs to be fast enough that the subject doesn’t move during the exposure time.
