Focus Modes
DSLR cameras offer two kinds of focusing: autofocus and manual focus. With autofocus, the camera tracks the subject and adjusts the focus automatically. With manual focus, the photographer must manually turn the ring on the lens to focus.
Most cameras have two different autofocus modes: one for still subjects and one for moving subjects. For sports, use the continuous autofocus mode for moving subjects. This mode keeps making focusing adjustments until you press the shutter release button all the way down and take the photo.
DSLRs also offer different focus points so you can tell the camera where to focus in the scene. A controller on the back of the camera lets you select a focus point.
