A fast way to preview how an image looks in black and white is to reduce the saturation to –100. You can do this in Adobe Camera Raw or the Develop module in Adobe Lightroom. This quick adjustment removes all the color from the image. Dragging the one slider gives you a good idea of what the image will look like in monochrome.
I do this when I want to see if it is worth working on the image in Silver Efex Pro 2. If it looks bad, I can quickly slide from –100 back up to 0 and work on the image in color.
