Before I started using Silver Efex Pro to create my black-and-white images, I used this method. The idea is simple: Use a gradient overlay in Photoshop. It takes the gradient and maps the colors to the layer below; when you use a black-and-white gradient, it changes the color image to black and white. It’s quick and easy to do—and the results are usually pretty good.
1. Open the file in Photoshop.
2. Click the Gradient Map Adjustment in the Adjustments panel.
3. Click the gradient that opens and choose the Black–White gradient.
4. Click OK. The resulting image will be in black and white.
