Digital cameras have two different sensor sizes: full frame and cropped. A full frame sensor is a digital sensor that is the same size as a 35mm piece of film. Cameras such as Nikon D610, Nikon D800, and Nikon D4 have full frame sensors. A cropped sensor is smaller than a 35mm piece of film. Models such as the Nikon D5300 and Nikon D7100 have cropped sensors.
A cropped sensor camera offers advantages to the budding sports photographer:
• Cropped sensor cameras are usually less expensive than full frame sensor models.
• When the action takes place far from where you can photograph, the cropped sensor records less of the scene in front of the camera than a full frame sensor does with the same lens.
