The first thing to do when shooting sports in low light is look for the light source. Are you shooting in a gym with nice, even overhead lights? Or at an outside pool where the illumination is coming from lights attached to nearby buildings? The answer to these questions will determine how you proceed.
In the high school gym, the lights in the ceiling directly over the volleyball game looked pretty bright. However, I still needed to use a high ISO of 1600 and a very wide aperture of f/1.8 to get the 1/400 second shutter speed needed to freeze the action.
