A photograph is a record of the light reflecting off a subject. The shutter speed, aperture, and ISO determine how much of that light is allowed to reach the sensor. Too much light and the image is overexposed; too little light and the image is underexposed. So how do you determine how much light needs to be recorded for a proper exposure? You need to measure the available light in the scene and set the camera accordingly. Cameras feature three metering modes that each “look at” the light in the scene differently. The Nikon cameras I use offer spot metering, center-weighted metering, and matrix metering.
