One of the big differences between professional-level cameras and consumer-level cameras is the shutter speed range. The professional cameras can shoot at 1/8000 second while the consumer-level cameras can only go as fast as 1/4000 second. When you shoot sports at the professional level, that extra speed can come in useful. But if you are photographing kids’ sports, especially in low light, 1/4000 second is plenty fast enough.
Usually, you control the shutter speed with a dial on the back or front of the camera. Just rotate the dial up or down to increase or decrease the shutter speed.
