Why write a book like this in the
digital age? After all, there are
numerous web sites with textures,
photos, illustrations, and fonts to
be had for free or a pittance. Why
would any designer want to make
a textured background herself and
ruin a perfectly good manicure?
Isn’t it true that to be a good
designer in this slick, tidy age we
need only a Visa card, some great
links, and a mastery of Photoshop?
No. Trust me, I adore my Mac
to the point of obsession. But as
a designer and instructor, I do
lament the sameness of so much
of the design that appears when
we’re not willing to shut o our
precious machines, push back our
ergonomic chairs, pull out some of
our dusty art supplies, and make
something original that has our bit
of humanity ...
