This is an old, tried-and-true technique that can be hokey at worst
and quite delightful at best. The science behind this technique is
that salt sucks water to itself, and because salt is a crystal, it not
only sucks up the water, but leaves a crystalline image behind.
If you sprinkle table salt into damp, darkish wash (a wet layer of
paint), within seconds you’ll see little snowfl ake images appear.
This seems foolproof, but of course, it isn’t. For this technique to
work, make sure you don’t pour the salt on, and when you sprinkle
the salt, you have to do it at exactly the right moment. You want to
