When my friend Tosya and I attended a watercolor workshop
by Lian Quan Zhen, we were fascinated to watch this artist blow
the paint around and even use his fi ngers as he created his fresh,
spontaneous paintings. His control was absolutely amazing!
I have better control of where my paint ends up by blowing
through a drinking straw, but experiment and see what you
can do—use your fi ngers, a hair dryer, let the rain fall on the
wet paint, tilt the paper, add texture to the substrate and let
the paint work its way through it. The spidery tendrils have
lots of possibilities as graphic elements.
