8.2 Voice over Wireless IP Roaming
8.2.1 Introduction
The most demanding application for 802.11 roaming that is currently practical and in
widespread use is Voice over IP (VoIP). Indeed, many of the enhancements discussed in this
chapter were created either as stopgap measures to provide voice-capable roaming in the
absence of standards, or, in some cases, to provide a capability for VoIP that is beyond what
the 802.11 standards are expected to offer in the future. Our consideration of the vendor-
