Optimizing Beyond the 802.11 Standard
Spectralink’s stringent performance goals without waiting for 802.11r. We examine Key
Caching in the next section.
8.3 Opportunistic Key Caching
8.3.1 Introduction
In the earlier chapters, we presented and studied the IEEE 802.11i concept of preauthenti-
cation. The purpose of this complex mechanism is to place keying material in roaming
candidate APs in advance of the roam itself. If we free ourselves from the bounds of the IEEE
802.11i standard and its laudable goal of wide interoperability, there are mechanisms that go
beyond the standard to address this problem, which are simpler and sometimes more powerful
