9.2 Overview of the 802.11r Standard
The phrase “Fast BSS Transition” implies that the 802.11r standard attempts to define
procedures and protocols that result in an 802.11 roam. In reality, 802.11r will be able to
produce a faster security and QoS-sensitive BSS transition than would be possible without
802.11r. The standard does this by addressing the part of the delays in the hand-off procedures
that lie in the areas of 802.11i security and 802.11e QoS. In this chapter, we will study how
802.11r proposes to reduce the roaming delays attributable to both of these factors. However,
