When you shoot outdoors on location, you want the scene to help sell the item, but not draw attention away from the product. The easiest way to do this is to keep the frame clutter free and use a shallow depth of field. With a shallow depth of field, the background is out of focus, keeping the attention right on the item you want to sell.
For the bike shots shown here, I set up the bicycle on a path with a bush in the background. The first image was shot using a deep aperture of f/16, and you can see how the bush in the background is in sharp focus. For the second shot, I changed the aperture to f/2.8, creating a very shallow depth of field. The bike really stands out in the second shot compared to the first.
