component, helix scattering component, volume scattering component, and wire scattering compo-
nent (Zhang et al. 2009). This model is the extended version of the four- component scattering model
developed by Ma et al. (2014). The wire scattering component is the fth component added to the
MCSM model.
Each of the scattering components has signicance in feature extraction. Double- bounce
scattering, volume scattering, and surface scattering are used to describe the polarimetric back-
scatter of naturally occurring scatterers from a pair of orthogonal surfaces (in urban regions), from
a cloud of randomly oriented dipoles and from moderately rough surface, respectively, and helix
