ating a smooth texture for the surfaces covered by oil. Similarly, the oil- free region naturally has a
coarser texture than the oil- covered surfaces.
This difference in texture is captured by the SAR sensor, and a signicant difference between
the backscattering values can easily be noticed. Some texture- based techniques, e.g., gray- level
co−occurrence matrix, have been widely used for distinguishing oil spills from the water body
