planning countermeasure actions for these oil spill incidents is tracking the spread. If we look at
the frequency of the oil that has been spilled over the last few decades, a gradual decline can be
observed. According to ITOPF’s Oil Tanker Spill Statics (2019) report, there have only been a few
incidents of larger oil spills that are responsible for a high quantity of oil spilling into water bodies.
During the 1970s, 49% of the oil was spilled only from 20 large incidents, compared with a 51%
margin from 768 smaller incidents (see Figure 9.3).
