9.11 CONCLUSIONS AND FUTURE WORK

Although the number of oil spill incidents has decreased over time, some of these incidents go

unnoticed due to remote areas or less severity of the incident. Some of the major oil spills, like

Deepwater Horizon, affected the ecosystem adversely. After a couple of years, the oil was cleaned

from the shorelines, but a large amount of the dispersed oil sat on the sea bed, and according to

several experiments, it is speculated that there is still an oil layer of good thickness lying over

the seaoor. SAR satellites provide good resolution imagery with frequently repeated passes and
