The Many Faces of the Membership Economy
Membership as an organizational structure has been around for a couple thousand years. Think of the Catholic Church or the medieval guilds.
The Membership Economy, however, is a new idea enabled by the technological transformation that is sweeping the world, a result of the personal computer, the Internet, social networks, user-generated content, smartphones, cloud computing, big data, and more.
Membership is the future of all business models, with an emphasis on formal, ongoing relationships. I believe it is replacing the transactional model, and organizations that don’t evolve will fail.
