Tires often have more traction when warm. On the dragstrip, the best way to heat up the tires is to burn some rubber. Most front-wheel-drive cars can stay in place while doing this simply by holding the handbrake. Rear-wheel-drive cars don’t have this option. You can hold down the brakes and floor it, but this puts a lot of wear on your rear brakes. Line locks solve this problem by allowing you to activate the front brakes on their own. These are mostly useful for drag cars and should not be used while the car is moving. Line locks also should not be installed on cars with antilock brakes or split diagonal brake systems.
