You can also additionally use Binwalk for performing a number of other operations, such as detecting the entropy of a given firmware image. This can help you identify whether a firmware image is compressed or encrypted. In order to perform entropy analysis, run binwalk with the -E flag followed by the firmware name as shown in the following screenshot:

As you can see in the preceding screenshot, this particular firmware does not appear to be encrypted because of a lack of large variations which you would find in encrypted firmware images.
