The ability to modify firmware is extremely powerful and useful for attackers. This enables the attackers to bypass protection mechanisms, remove security features, and do more. Due to tools such as FMK, it becomes extremely easy for attackers to add their own malware or backdoor to any IoT device firmware, which could then be used by a user located anywhere in the world.
This is also one of the reasons why signature and checksum verification of firmware is extremely important to prevent attacks arising because of malicious or modified firmware.
