To simulate a pop-up window in Mac OS X, drag a folder or disk icon onto the Dock. From now on, when you click-and-hold (or Control-click) its docked icon, a list of its contents sprouts upward, for your perusal pleasure.
Or just drag a window to any edge of the screen until only its title bar is visible. When you click the green Zoom button (or drag an icon onto the title bar), the window pops up just like a pop-up window of old.
