It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

Zip files exist on the Mac, too, and you create them almost the same way: Control-click (or right-click) a file or folder and choose Create Archive from the contextual menu. See Section 4.10 for a discussion of software compression standards on the Mac.
