Magnetic hard disk drives

The HDDs (SAS/SATA/NL-SAS) in vSAN hybrid configurations are used for data storage capacity. They are also a critical and determining factor in the available stripe width for VM storage policies. To get a defined stripe width, we must ensure that a particular stripe width should be available across all servers in the cluster to achieve the objective. If the VM has a high failure to tolerate setting then we need additional HDDs, as each component must be replicated to meet the requirement.

VMware supports the following three types of magnetic disk:

  • Serial Attached SCSI (SAS)
  • Near Line Serial Attached SCSI (NL-SAS)
  • Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA)
