Another grievance of Indian consumers is the quantity reductions practised by merchants. To prevent this malpractice, the Standards of Weights and Measurement Act was passed in 1956, which was later replaced by a more comprehensive and less defective Act in 1976 in alignment with International Bureau of Weights and Standards. The act covers, apart from standards of weights, measures and packaging of products, related areas such as metrology, inter-state verification and stamping and numeration of products. The act is supplemented by the Standards of Weights and Measures (Enforcement) Act, 1985 with a set of rules to enforce the act effectively, apart from having provisions with regard to pre-packaged products. ...
