
many people today still have the expectation that it’s their boss’s job
to manage them, and that they have no part to play in this
relationship other than to be ‘managed’. Where the relationship
doesn’t work, the boss is usually to blame, or it’s simply assumed
that when two people can’t work together in a boss–subordinate
relationship it’s merely a case of ‘personality conflict’. That lazy
phrase, however, is often just an alibi for failing to work at a
relationship and failing to improve both communication and self-
awareness.
