It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

すると、考えるだけで気分が悪くなるようなハックだらけのコードになっ

解決策
円形の表示を生成するためのスクリプトがいくつか公開されています。
これらを使うと 1つ1 つの文字が <span>要素で囲まれ、円形に並ぶよう
に移動や回転が行われます。しかしこのようなスクリプトはハック以外の
何者でもなく、ページ上の要素数が無駄に増加することになります。
CSSだけを使って円形の表示を生成できるようなよい方法は今のところ
