Growing Comfortable with Your Gear and Developing Your Skills

As you learn about the ins and outs of your camera and how to get the right kind of exposure in different situations, the next step is to actually apply the knowledge you’ve gathered and put it into practice. In this section I give you a few tips on ways to get out there and start shooting!

Practice, practice, practice

When you have armed yourself with the knowledge of exposure and camera settings (which I provide earlier in this chapter), it’s time to put that knowledge into good use and master the skills of wedding photography. You’ve heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect,” and although it may be cliché, it is certainly still true. Before you shoot your first wedding, you will want to know your camera well. You also want the ability to discern what settings and functions you need to get the best picture in every scenario, and that skill comes with practice. So go out and take some pictures. This is the fun part, after all. Here are a few ways you can practice:

check.png tip.eps Utilizing your family and friends: Offer to take free pictures of your family and friends. It’s a great way to ease yourself into photographing people because you won’t have to worry about taking too much time to adjust your exposure and settings.
