Beginning with the Basics of Scenes

In order to tell a story, you must first understand how it’s put together. The scenes are the building blocks of the day. In the following sections, I go over what scenes do and what they include.

Understanding the purpose of scenes

remember.eps A scene is a subunit of the overall story that takes place in one setting and has a beginning, middle, and end. A scene in a photographic narrative should do the following:

check.png Advance the plot: The primary purpose of a scene is to help to move the story along.

check.png Create a mood: As you tell the story of a wedding, document the emotions of the people around you and use elements like lighting and composition to accurately portray those emotions in each photograph.

check.png Forge a connection between the character and viewer: A scene should reveal something about the people in your narrative that helps the viewer feel connected to them. Whether it’s a photo of the bride with tears in her eyes as she hugs her mother or the groom laughing with his groomsmen as they help him with his tie, you want to incorporate expressions and details that ...
