The business-buying process encompasses a number of explicit stages. One popular model delineates eight distinct stages of the decision process in business markets.20 These stages are shown in Figure 4.1, and the important considerations in each of the eight stages are discussed in more detail in the following sections. Note that in modified-rebuy or straight-rebuy situations, some stages are compressed or bypassed. For example, the buyer normally has a favorite supplier or a ranked list of suppliers and can skip the search and the proposal solicitation.
