Deprecation of File Replication Services

In Windows Server 2000, Microsoft introduced the File Replication Service (FRS); it was used to replicate the SYSVOL AD folder.

SYSVOL is a folder that contains public files from the domain that needs to be replicated to other domain controllers in the domain. It contains files required for group policies and user login scripts.

FRS has had a lot of issues when it comes to replications, especially performance-wise. FRS always replicates the entire file, no matter what kind of changes you've made. This is an issue for AD sites connected by slow WAN links. FRS does not have API or Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) support, which can be used to monitor performance.
