Canonical name (CNAME) records are aliases for FQDN. They work similar to nicknames. For example, I have an A record set up for blog.rebeladmin.com; there is a blog running under it. Some time ago, I used my.rebeladmin.com for the same blog. If users still use my.rebeladmin.com, I need them to still see my blog at blog.rebeladmin.com. To do that, I have to use CNAME records.
