So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Summary
Distributed Queries and linked servers have been around for quite some time in SQL Server, and while nothing has changed with linked servers in SQL Server 2012, knowing how to execute distributed queries and how to improve distributed query performance is always good to know.
This chapter also covered linking to external data sources, such as Excel and Access, simply because not all external data will come from SQL Server. Being able to access and query data from multiple different data sources is crucial in today's environments.
