The use of third-party components in both hardware and software products is unavoidable. Third-party products are integrated into final (end item) products for a number of reasons: to improve the development schedule, to gain access to products that have intellectual property protections such as patents or copyrights, and to integrate components that the development team members do not have the specific resources to develop themselves. While the use of third-party products may make tremendous sense during development, their use can add risk and legal complexity during an acquisition. All third-party products must be clearly identified and fully licensed for resale.
