Shared storage refers to storage that can be equally accessed by all VM Server systems in the server pool. This means that all of the servers can both read from and write to this storage. Several types of storage can be shared, including SAN and NAS systems.
SAN storage uses a network that is designed specifically for storage and does not allow normal network traffic. SAN systems typically include extensive redundancy and performance features. Because of that, SAN systems are usually fairly expensive. In the author’s opinion, SAN systems are usually worth the cost.
