Tuning Virtual Machines

Within the virtual machine, you tune the OS like any other Linux or Windows system. You can modify the parameters and configure the system as necessary to support the application being run on that server. As mentioned earlier in this chapter, you can manage the number of VCPUs and their placement on physical CPUs at the VM Server. In addition, you can configure the priority of the virtual CPUs as well. This will be covered later in Chapter 19.

In general, there is not much to tune at the OS level. Most of the tuning efforts are geared toward proper sizing and planning of the system. Most of the tuning changes that must be made to the OS are to support applications, such as Oracle, so that large amounts of shared memory ...
