This is about the quickest, easiest, and most time-tested way to add a lightning effect to your photo without having to draw a
bunch of shapes or jump through a lot of time-consuming hoops.
Lightning Effect
STEP ONE: Open the photo you want to
use as your background (in this case, a
photo of a creepy house at night). Press
D and then X to set your Foreground
color to white and your Background
color to black. Create a new layer by
clicking on the Create a New Layer icon
at the top of the Layers palette.
