Security Restrictions on Network Shares

As you probably know, Windows XP allows you to set security restrictions on shared resources. It is generally preferred to set Everyone to Full Control on the share and manage file permissions at the NTFS level to restrict user access. Naturally, your drives must be formatted as NTFS to do this. Setting permissions on the files, rather than on the shares, ensures the same level of access permissions for a particular group or individual, regardless of potentially conflicting or nested shares. In addition, setting permissions at the file system level ensures that a user or group will have the same access permissions whether they are accessing a system remotely or from the local keyboard.
