When I went on the O’Reilly platform, I was astonished to find all the books there, plus live events and sandboxes so you could play around with the technology.I’ve been on the O’Reilly platform for more than eight years. I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
How it works...
Note that the first command given to us is a native Linux command; the second is a PowerShell command.
We use two automatic variables here to find out whether there was an error in execution. The first is $?, which checks if the last command executed without an error. The value the variable holds is Boolean, that is, TRUE, standing for successful execution. In our script, we negate this in order to use it with the if block.
The other variable is $LASTEXITCODE, which contains the exit code of the last command. In our case, the exit code was 2. The ping: ghostname: Name or service not known error is also displayed.
