It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.

12.5.2 1:1 Protection Scheme
In contrast with the 1 + 1 scheme, this scheme does not provide a perma-
nent bridge at the transmitter, which means that the transmission is not
done in parallel on working and protect paths. The protection channel is
kept reserved for providing the protection when needed. The channel is nor-
mally kept disconnected at both the transmitting and receiving ends, and
the switchover is carried out at both the ends when needed in case of a fail-
