Problem: Key functions in the community depend on one person.
The corollary to the previous section is that, when you’re not careful, a person can accumulate responsibility until it crushes them. Even when people seem to be available at every waking moment, you never want to plan on that. For one, it’s inhumane. Just as people need a break from their paid jobs, they also need a break from their unpaid jobs. And let’s be honest with ourselves—significantly contributing to an open source community is an unpaid job. But it also puts your community at risk. What happens when that key person decides to finally take a vacation? Or they lose electrical service for days?
